Worried About Tax?

TaxHelp for Older People is a service originally provided through the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (associated with the Chartered Institute of Taxation) but is now provided by Tax Volunteers, an independent organisation, to make free professional advice on personal tax available to older people who could not otherwise afford to pay for it.

TOP is supported by all the main accountancy bodies and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and works in partnership with all voluntary and statutory bodies concerned with older people’s welfare. It remains, however, a completely independent organisation, offering a fully professional and confidential service to its clients.

How much do you know about tax?
Test yourself:

  • What does a K code mean?
  • What is a dividend tax credit?
  • What is your personal allowance at 67?
  • Can you get interest gross on a joint savings account?
  • What is an allowance restriction?
  • How is your State pension taxed?
  • How do you claim a refund?
  • Can you transfer allowances to your spouse?
  • What are the different rates of tax?
  • Should you be completing a self-assessment form?

10/10 - you have no problems
9 or under - phone TOP or E-mail us taxvol@taxvol.org.uk

  • Do you worry about your tax affairs?
  • Do you know if you are paying the right amount?
  • Are you nervous of approaching HM Revenue & Customs for help?

There is now an independent free tax advice service for older people on low incomes who cannot afford to pay for professional advice. TaxHelp for Older People (TOP) runs regular advice surgeries at Age Concerns and similar venues somewhere near you.

  • What sort of problems will TOP help with?

Any tax problem, no matter how minor it may seem. You can have your PAYE notice of coding checked, or get help with form filling, reclaiming an overpayment of tax, or replying to a letter from HMRC. You may simply wish to have a tax healthcheck to ensure peace of mind, knowing that everything is in order.

  • How much does it cost?

Nothing, if you have a household income - you and your partner together - of up to around £15000 a year and you are close to 60 or older. Those caring for an eligible older person, whether family, friend or professional, may also request help on their behalf. Power of Attorney is not necessary.

Who are the advisers?

They are all tax professionals who are giving their time and skills to TOP. They act totally independently of both HMRC and the firms they work for and provide a completely confidential service.

How do I get help?

Very simply. Just telephone the TOP lo-call helpline on 0845 601 3321 or 01308 488066. If the office is not manned, leave your name and telephone number on the voicemail and TOP will call you back.

All interviews with an adviser are by appointment and in private. You may also seek telephone advice if your query is a simple one. Home visits will be arranged in cases of disability.

If you have any queries, contact TOP on the helpline or write to us.
