The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG)
Who are we and what do we do?
The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group
(LITRG) is part of
the
Chartered Institute of Taxation.
The main focus of
LITRG activity is to provide a voice to people on low incomes
(household income of £15,000 and below) caught up in today's
complicated tax and benefits systems.
The group is made up of tax specialists from
professional practice and HM Revenue & Customs as well as
experts on benefits.
Most members of LITRG are unpaid.
We collect evidence of problems in the tax
system for those on low incomes. We then work with the
relevant government authorities to try to resolve them. Our aim is to persuade
politicians and the Revenue to make the tax system simpler and
fairer.
We currently target our help towards four
categories of people who are apt to encounter difficulties with the
tax regime. They are
pensioners, students, disabled people and low-income workers
but we will be adding others to the list.
The LITRG website
LITRG also runs a website which contains
a considerable amount of help on tax for each of the above groups.
From the following links you can find which topic which interests
you using the drop down menus or the static left hand menu or simply
by using the search facility:
There is also a large section providing help and
information on tax credits
In addition we have a Contact Us
section
on the website where you can e mail us with your queries on tax and
tax credits or let us have your comments on the site
including how we can improve it.
To keep everyone up-to-date on our activities,
we issue a number
of press releases
and items of news.
If you want to keep up to date with what we are
doing you can
register on the site to receive news articles as they
are published.
We have produced a number of more formal
reports
on important tax and related issues affecting
pensioners, students, low income workers and disabled people.
You can also view all our submissions
to
government consultations and parliamentary committees
